I have been an Arsenal fan since the 1997-1998 season. The humiliating defeat last week Wednesday in Baku, Azerbaijan in the UEFA Europa League final to another London club, Chelsea was too much to bear. Since 2004, after Arsenal set the record of not losing a game the whole season, my patience with the club has diminished. I no longer have the confidence in watching live matches involving Arsenal. I don’t know what pushed me into watching that match. I was miserable for the rest of the week. Thank God Liverpool didn’t disappoint me in the UEFA Champions League. I would have lost it if Tottenham Hotspurs won the champions league.
The fall of Arsenal began after the loss to Barcelona in the champions league in 2006. Most of the players who made up the invincibles left(the Arsenal unbeaten team in 2004). The manager, Arsene Wenger brought in young players and there wasn’t an experienced player in the team. We had to bring William Gallas from Chelsea. Thierry Henri had to come back for some cameo appearances from New York Red Bulls.
Not having experienced players in the team was the biggest problem Arsenal had. If Arsenal had at least 3 or 4 players from the invincible’s in the younger team assembled by Wenger, they would have imbibed that passion of winning in the rest of the team. What we now have is pitiable. We had to get Mesut Ozil but the guy is a wimpy player. Someone that gives up so easily. Eden Hazard was the man who won the Europa League for Chelsea and Ozil was nowhere to be found. Throughout the season Ozil was missing in action.
If Aaron Ramsey was in the team in the final, maybe we would have won. Not having Ramsey in the team against Valencia might have given Arsenal a strange confidence that they would win it. Unfortunately, Chelsea took advantage of that weakness. Maitland-Niles and Kolasinac aren’t defenders but good wingers. Whenever Maitland-Niles went forward, Sokratis covered for him. But you can’t put a slow defender like Sokratis up against Hazard. Maitland-Niles was slow to track back and Hazard ran riot against them with the Brazilian left back in Chelsea. Pedro did same to Kolasinac and Maneul on the right wing.
We had no midfield. Xhaka was just ok. Torreria was average. Ozil couldn’t feed Aubameyang and Lacazette the ball to score. Iwobi should have been in the match from the first half or at least the beginning of the second half. Maybe he would have changed the game. I knew that the team that opened the scoring would win the game and Chelsea won 4 – 1. An ex-Arsenal player opened the scoring. What an irony. Giroud should never have been sold in the first place. Worse off, we sold him to our rivals.
Arsenal have made big mistakes in selling off our best players. From the invincibles to Ramsey. Letting the guy go on a free? Wow! He was our best player for the season. The season is over and Arsenal needs to get more players into the team. Not average players please. I don’t think that can happen since we didn’t qualify for the champions league. No player wants to play in the UEL. Imagine loosing 5 games that would have help us in finishing third in the league and losing out finally by not winning the UEL. We need to rebuild the team and all the flops need to leave starting with Mesut “Wimpy” Ozil. That dude needs to play with Fernebache, Besiktas or Galatasaray in Turkey since he is so in love with THE Turkish President.
